New starters

New starters seeking to learn tai chi undertake a 6 week introductory course.
Successful completion of this course will entitle them to provisional membership.

The course aims to teach 5 qigong exercises, 5 form postures and 5 partner drills.
You learn one of each for the first five weeks.


5 qigong exercises

A basic grasp of these simple qigong exercises is necessary:

  1. 3 circle qigong

  2. 4 directions - forwards & backwards

  3. 4 directions - to the side

  4. Form posture qigong

  5. Plate exercise


5 form postures

You will one form posture per lesson:

  1. Raise & lower arms

  2. Circle left

  3. Rolling-parry

  4. Peng left

  5. Transition move


5 partner drills

A basic sense of these drills is required:

  1. 4 directions - with a partner

  2. Eyes-closed walking

  3. Monkey paws

  4. Penetrating defences (intro)

  5. Yielding exercise


Week 6

Week 6 is for revision.

You need to demonstrate a reasonable sense of the introductory material.
That way, we know that you are prepared to make an effort.

If we are satisfied with your progress, you will be given provisional membership and can start working towards your first belt.

Provisional membership

A provisional class member is entitled to wear:

  1. plain black T-shirt

  2. black kung fu trousers

  3. class logo patch

These are not mandatory.
