Understanding the training

Newcastle Tai Chi offers a lot of different learning opportunities. It is important to understand what they are, why they are different and what purpose they serve.

Lessons

Our school offers these classes:

  1. Monday night

  2. Workshops

  3. Private lessons

  4. Indoor training

Monday night

The Monday night sessions are an opportunity to practice basic skills, learn new material, socialise, receive corrections, be graded and ask questions.

Workshops

A workshop is an opportunity to look further into the art. To work directly with
Sifu Waller. To explore future topics in advance of your grade.

I'm really enjoying the training! There is so much to learn, so I'm having to discipline myself to focus on what we are learning and try not to think about how much more there is!

The workshop was excellent. It was great to spend all that time on one concept and drill into it in more detail than is possible in a normal class. It was great to delve into a single subject in so much depth. It also showed how subtle tai chi is and yet so powerful. How small adjustments can make a massive difference. It was also interesting the difference between Tuesday's shuai jiao applications taster and the more subtle essence of pushing hands. And how effective tai chi is when you combine it all together. Plus the green tea lesson was great too, thanks.

Private lessons

A private lesson is an opportunity to work directly with Sifu Waller and to receive individual corrections.

New starters are not encouraged to do private lessons. An inexperienced student lacks the wherewithal to get the most out of the sessions. It is essentially wasted money.
More experienced school members can benefit from private lessons because they have some sense of context and perspective.
