classes qigong tai chi kung fu about us reviews a-z
A nice
place to be
Most students find their experience of our class to be very pleasant. They
come to class, they learn and the evening passes quickly.
There is no stress and everyone is friendly.
Baggage
Some people bring a lot of baggage with them to class.
This is unfortunate.
We can teach tai chi, qigong & tai chi and we can introduce people to
Taoism and Zen.
But we are not counsellors. Our ability to address emotional and
psychological issues is very limited.
I like that there's no macho,
aggressive attitude in the class, and that everyone is helpful and
respectful of one another.
I also like the structure of the class, and the clear syllabus that lets you
see how you're progressing.

You
We have found that the individual determines what happens in class. How the
student engages with our class is entirely their own concern.
Sifu Waller has designed the framework of the class, written the syllabus
and the code of conduct.
He cultivates a certain atmosphere of mutual respect and friendship.
Asian values
Most people adjust to the unfamiliarity of class quite rapidly and settle
in.
Others experience problems.
Don't expect to be treated in an English way. Asian attitudes are different
to English attitudes.
This is a Chinese martial arts class, so expect Asian values to predominate.
Your problem
When a student experiences problems in our classes, it is typically an
isolated situation in which the individual has a problem with us or we have
a problem with the attitude or behaviour of just one person.
Problems must be dealt with tactfully, calmly and quickly.
Protracted bad feeling is unpleasant and can spill over into the class;
affecting other students adversely.
Sanctuary
Sifu Waller cares deeply for the wellbeing and progress of all his students,
so the atmosphere in class is a very pleasant one.
We like to make our class a good place to be.
It is a rest from the cares of everyday life.
If we can help you with your problems, we will.
This said, Sifu Waller's capacity to help is limited to correcting your
posture, improving balance, using your body more efficiently, relaxing your
muscles and calming down.
He is not a counsellor nor would wish to be one. He cannot help people with
their 'baggage'.
Christmas turkey
Some people find Christmas time to be very stressful and they bring their
personal problems into class with them.
This is not a good idea.
Bringing your problems into class is selfish and inconsiderate.
Please take responsibility. Seek counselling or guidance from those best
able to provide it.
The sensei is not a therapist. The goal of the dojo is
to make healthy people healthier, physically and psychologically and
spiritually. It cannot be expected to repair badly damaged human beings. As
so if a member exhibits serious personal problems, the sensei's job is to
get rid of him, gracefully if possible, forcefully and definitively if
necessary.
(Dave Lowry)
Involving other people
A student with a problem usually seeks to involve the rest of the class.
This is pointless.
Other students are not experiencing your problem. Seeking to involve them in
your problem is intrusive and unwelcome.
Resolution
If there is something you don't like, you are welcome to discuss it with us.
We will help you to the best of our ability but ultimately this is our class
and this is the way we have chosen to do things.
Our class does not aim to please everybody.
